ISEPP Presentation October 29, 2011 Los Angeles

Title: Maelstrom Kids: A Moral Outrage

Abstract:

Suffer the children is our theme. What are the sources of suffering of American children? A historical perspective implicates the greedy psychopharmaceutical complex.  But that culprit, it turns out, is just a sequela of the bigger and more pernicious one: our culture. How this is so will be revealed.

Anger transcends to helplessness and frustration as we ask what feels a futile question: What can we do? We are unwitting participants of exponential cataclysmic social change. We can’t turn back the clock or fix our economic crisis.  Our children are the canaries suffering and dying in what has become a toxic culture.

The moral outrage is that our little canaries are scapegoated in the mainstream culture and exploited by the psychopharmaceutical complex. As long as parents persist in trusting the latter we have a conundrum. Labeling and medicating comprise “help” that is toxic.

Neuroscientists, educational psychologists, environmentalists, nutritionists and others provide seeds of hope. We therapists can help after all, but what’s required is a sea change of attitude and lots more education as we look to researchers from other disciplines for new methods to save our children. We can help parents help their kids. But the road to enlightenment demands hard work and dedication from us and from families. There is no easy fix.

RESCUING KIDS FROM THE PSYCHIATRIC MAELSTROM: Promising Practices on the Horizon.Keynote Speaker for NYS School Social Workers’ Association Annual Conference

This is the title of Betsy’s presentation as Keynote Speaker to the NYS School Social Workers Association’s annual conference on November 5th, 2010. It was well attended and many excellent workshops were offered. Betsy received great feedback from her audience. Many remarked that the photos illustrating her promising practices really enhanced the presentation.

One of Betsy’s audience was the executive director of NYSSSWA’s national organization, Frederick Streeck, who asked Betsy if she would travel to Boston in the spring of 2012 to present to the School Social Work Association of America’s annual conference. Of course, she is most pleased to anticipate an official invitation from the conference organizers.

April 2nd, 2010: WCNY Syracuse, Central New York Morning News with Joe Galuski

Betsy had a 10-minute interview, much too short to cover Joe’s questions adequately.  He inquired about parents apologizing to teachers for their children’s misbehavior, blaming the misbehavior on parents’ failure to give children their medication in the morning. He asked about antipsychotic medication. So we discussed the increase in bipolar diagnoses and concomitant increase in antipsychotic meds and polypharmacy (taking 3 or 4 medications simultaneously) and lack of studies on long-term effects and lack of approval for children. A podcast is available at http://WCNY.com
